Natural beeswax church tapers, hand-dipped in the traditional way by lowering a cotton wick into pure melted wax again and again until the candle reaches its thickness. At 8 inches and 1/4 of an inch across, this is the length for shorter services and for a longer evening at home, and each candle burns for about 1 hour 20 minutes.

The wax is 100% beeswax and nothing else: not bleached, not dyed, filtered, and left the amber color it came out of the hive. It burns with the gentle smell of honey familiar from Orthodox churches, low in smoke and free of soot, so it does not darken an icon on the shelf above it. Suitable for the altar, for the icon corner at home, and for candles brought to church, and used for Pascha and Orthodox Easter services as well.

Ingredients: 100% beeswax and a cotton wick. Free from paraffin, fillers, fragrance, and dyes.

Other Sizes of Orthodox Beeswax Church Tapers

The same wax and the same cotton wick come in six lengths, because a candle set on a stand to burn down and a candle held through a service are asked to do different things. Compare the burn times below and take the one that matches how long you need the flame.

Questions & Answers

How Many Candles Come in a Set?

That is the choice above the Add to Cart button. Sets start small, so a first order can be a trial rather than a commitment, and run up to parish quantities where the price per candle drops. The candles are identical in every set; only the count changes.

Will These Tapers Fit a Standard Candle Holder?

Not always, and it is worth measuring first. These are pencil-thin tapers, far narrower than a dinner candle, and the exact diameter is in the specifications above. Church candle stands and holders made for thin tapers take them directly. If yours is too wide, soften the base of the candle briefly in a flame and press it into the cup; if it is slightly too tight, pare a little wax off the base with a knife.

Can I Order a Small Set Before Buying for the Parish?

Yes, and we would suggest it. The smallest set exists for exactly that: to see how the wax burns in your own holders and your own building before committing to a standing order. Parishes usually try one length, then settle on two, a shorter one for the candle stand and a taller one for services.

Why Are These Candles Amber Rather Than White?

Because nothing has been done to the wax. Beeswax comes out of the hive amber, and it only turns white if it is bleached or dyed. Ours is filtered and left as it is, which is the wax customarily used in Orthodox churches. The shade shifts a little between batches, deeper in some and paler in others, and that is the material rather than a fault.

Is the 8 Inch Taper for Standing or for Holding?

Either. One hour twenty is long enough to hold through a shorter service, a moleben or a panikhida, and long enough to outlast most of what a stand candle is asked to do. Parishes often keep this length alongside a shorter one for exactly that reason: it covers the cases in between without needing a third size.
